Have you been particularly overwhelmed, sad, angry or low energy?
Are you noticing you're disconnected from those you love, or not interested in what you usually care about?
Can’t quite shake it and it feels too hard to even try to feel better?
When people experience depression, they’ll very often go a long time suffering in silence. Society’s messages are often to “keep up” and “power through” and that being depressed somehow means we just can’t handle life. These messages are often given very heavily to men, though women get a lot of pressure to “do it all” as well. All of these messages are social pressures and stigmas - and I assure you that they’re just plain wrong.
Overwhelming medical research has shown that depression is a biological condition that has system-wide connections. Like other health conditions, depression usually needs to be treated to be resolved.
Ignoring depression does not work.
Covering up depression does not work.
Treating it with respect works.
Depression can look different in each person, though here are some common symptoms:
- Sadness or loss of interest
- Difficulty concentrating or staying motivated
- Thoughts of suicide
- Appetite changes (too much or too little)
- Sleep trouble (too much, too little or early awakening)
- Feeling guilty, hopeless or pointless
- Low energy, feeling flat (apathy) or even mood swings
- Isolating, disconnecting from others
