Most people will experience some traumatic experience in their lifetime -
whether it’s an accident, abusive or neglectful relationships, sudden loss of a loved one,
exposure to violence, the impacts of war or a natural disaster... So much can happen.
While people can move through these events and bounce back fairly quickly;
often there are lasting effects,(called “post-traumatic stress”) for long after the event.
Whether you’re having lasting impacts is not a matter of strength or weakness.
Healing from a trauma is different than other stresses in life.
Common symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress can include:
- Avoiding places, situations, and sounds that are reminders
- Anxiety, fears, depression, numbness or guilt
- Reliving the trauma through thoughts, nightmares or flashbacks
- Irritability, agitation, anger and staying on “high alert”
- Aggressive, reckless behavior, including self-harm
- Particular difficulty remembering details of the event
Having a skilled therapist working with you through your healing is having an ally.
You don’t have to figure it out all on your own.
Trauma Treatment
Research shows psychotherapy is important in highly effective trauma treatment - because it can:
- Help you understand your trauma and related reactions.
- Find new skills and approaches to your pain and your healing.
- Learn ways to live freely again, even in light of the trauma you’ve experienced.
After many years of experience treating direct and complex trauma, I know that what works is unique to each person.
In therapy we’ll understand you, what happened and how it's impacting your life now. We'll look at what you've tried and how to get you some relief. Beyond what we sort out together, we can decide to work with your physician, or with other providers and alternative approaches where that’ll be effective. While we can't change what happened, we can find ways to carry on from here. My focus is supporting you to adapt and heal in the ways that will make sense for you.
